BETWEEN // REALMS
Time & Space ~ October 2021, Joshua Tree CA

/////////////

A collaborative project created at exactly the right time, in exactly the right space, initiating a journey into the unknown

An exercise in letting go and breaking free of control, the crutch of perfection, and dissolving the all encompassing ego

A lesson in embracing the blurred lines, glitches, & flaws of existence to look from the outside in

A practice in finding peace within, the slow & steady process of moving from darkness into light, the struggle and surrender of existing in each of those realms and all that is discovered between them ~

:: NOTES FROM JOANA

Thank you to my friend Jake Ross for allowing space for expression, for willing to experiment with me, and for guiding me through the start of a personal journey without even being aware…for pushing me to get out of my comfort zone and create something beautiful out of sheer chance and an open environment for improvisation. The best moments from this experience were captured in an exploratory phase, outside of any boundaries, when there was no plan and the rawness of imperfection materialized. This was such an incredibly important learning experience for me in both my creative path as well as my personal growth. So much gratitude for allowing me to feel free of the confides of my mind to focus on what brings me the most light in my life - creative expression.

Art is in my blood… My mother is an amazing artist and my primary influence. She encouraged my creativity and exposed me to drawing, painting, graphic design, calligraphy, and typography as I grew up in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania in the 80s and 90s. After earning a fine arts degree in graphic design with a minor in art history, I moved to Los Angeles where my passion for the arts grew exponentially. Working as a designer for a photo and film studio helped me realize my love for photography and videography. Being around and working with some of the best photographers in the world inspired me to develop a minimalist style that combines design aesthetics with modern photographic techniques. I strive to make work that is simple yet striking.

:: NOTES FROM JAKE

Working with Joana on this project was a perfect fusion of two creatives from different disciplines. She let me do what I do best and trusted me to capture the movement and emotion that she expressed in the final piece. She helped to remind me that it was ok to embrace imperfections… To keep rolling no matter what and allow happy accidents to breed better results… That there is no right or wrong when it comes to creative expression.
